Cooperative Water Conservation Program
In September of 1998, UAJA, in cooperation with the State College Borough Water Authority (SCBWA) and the State College Area School District (SCASD), launched a pilot water conservation education program in the Easterly Parkway Elementary School. Three classes of fifth graders were provided with a kit of water saving fixtures and educational activities. Students were encouraged to involve their parents in this fun and educational unit. Activities actually provided hardware and instruction so students could retrofit their homes with water saving devices. Participation was good and enthusiasm high. Water consumption savings are now being measured for those families that participated. We believe that the life-long lessons learned in this water conservation unit could save millions of gallons of water over the long run. We hope to expand this program to other schools in 1999, and eventually have all State College fifth grade students participating.
